This Episode Includes:

Christopher Stroop is a scholar, writer, and commentator who holds a Ph.D. in Russian history from Stanford University and is currently a visiting instructor in the Honors College at the University of South Florida. Raised Evangelical and mobilized for the culture wars through church and Christian school, Christopher has become a fierce critic of the Christian Right and a proponent for the robust separation of church and state, as well as an advocate for ex-Evangelicals and spiritual abuse survivors. Christopher is a frequent contributor to Religion Dispatches, and, in addition to publishing academic articles, popular commentary, journalism, and policy research, blogs at Not Your Mission Field. Christopher has helped to raise awareness of Evangelicalism’s authoritarian nature among the broader public and to foster ex-Evangelical community, in part through his Ex-Evangelical Conversations series and by creating and promoting the hashtags #YouMightHaveGrownUpEvangelicalIf, #YouDontKnowEvangelicals, and #EmptyThePews.

Let’s Get Naked

In Episode 14 of the #AskSteveAustin Podcast, Steve Austin talks about getting naked. What would our relationships look life if we stripped it all away and stood, naked and unashamed, in front of those we care about? What would it do for our own mental health, if we peeled back the layers of fear, shame, and guilt, and saw ourselves for the first time? How might we heal, if we undressed from the unrealistic expectations of other people and institutions, and looked into a mirror of mercy, and began to practice some self-love?

let's get naked

It’s time to get naked, friends. That’s what this episode is all about.

Why I Don’t Really Care about Your Christianity

In Episode 010 of the #AskSteveAustin Podcast, Steve Austin tackles the idea that our humanity matters more than our religious labels.

Click here to listen on iTunes.

Show notes:

So this is a Christian community? Sure. And we’re also atheists, agnostics, Protestants, Catholics, non-religious Jews, mystics, blacks, whites, straights, gays, transgenders, and everyone in-between. We’re not here to argue sacred vs. secular or Sunday vs. Monday. We’re less concerned with theological rightness and far more passionate about kindness. We’re here to encourage everyone who shows up, from all walks of life, to keep on keepin’ on in the constant push and pull of a life that is rarely ever easy.

So you’re listening to this and wondering if I have lost my faith or lost my mind….no. But I’m giving myself permission to wrestle. To question. To be human.

I’ve known plenty of people who live a sterilized religious life, can quote the Bible cover-to-cover, but don’t give a damn about their neighbor. People who are more concerned with being outwardly polished than inwardly honest. Those who are more obsessed with following the rules and being approved by Americanized Christian culture, than giving a cup of cold water to a thirsty person. I was that person, too, the first twenty-eight years of my life.

But Jesus was different. Jesus taught us to live our lives, with Love as the motive for everything we do.

That’s what this episode is all about.
